Police Officer Adopts Homeless Addict’s Baby after Meeting Her While Patrolling the Streets

In 2017, a police officer had a chance encounter with a mother behind a convenience shop. He noticed she was pregnant and what transpired next changed their lives forever.

A police officer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was patrolling the streets and responding to a routine call when he spotted a couple sitting alongside a wall. Ryan Holets noticed they were doing drugs and walked up to them.

He switched on his body camera and recorded the incident that set his life on a different trajectory. The woman was in the process of taking another dose when he saw something shocking—she was pregnant.

Holets was saddened by the sight and reprimanded the mom, Crystal Champ, who was eight months along. On the cam, he told her: “You’re going to kill your baby. Why do you have to be doing that stuff?” It’s going to ruin your baby.”

The woman was very emotional and criticized the officer for judging her. Champ expressed:

“You have no idea how hard this is. I know what a horrible person I am and what a horrible situation I’m in.”

The police officer quickly realized he needed to show the woman some care and sympathy. The woman had faced homelessness for two years and struggled to fight her drug addiction.

Champ revealed her desire. She wanted someone to adopt her unborn baby, so the little one would have a better chance to survive and make a life for herself. The officer didn’t charge the couple and made a bold decision.

Holets offered to adopt the child. He said: “I was led by God to take the chance. God brought us all together.” He didn’t have another explanation for what transpired. The mother was shocked by the offer and realized he had answered her prayers.

Holets went home to his wife, Rebecca, and told her about the encounter. The option to adopt had always been on their minds, so she didn’t need much convincing to agree with her husband’s decision.

She stated: “He already knew my heart on the issue, and he knew that I would be totally on board with it.” While they wished they could help and adopt every child in need, they knew that raising the child was enough and would change her life forever.

The little girl was born and named Hope. The mother handed her over to the Holets and promised to take good care of her. Champ was happy her baby would have a stable life and a chance to be nurtured in an environment suitable for a newborn.
